Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of how art could serve as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was socially aware and showed her how to use the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and was raised. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer and was in awe of the idea to film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. When she was a student DuVernay was interested in creating for television journalism. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to examine the garbage from a home belonging to a jury member. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a new publicist at a studio. From this position she started her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
